Thoughts on Adventure Capitalist, HyperHippo, and my break until after Labor Day...

As implied in my previous post to this little blog (which is not so little anymore - lots of reads by you all on the Kongregate forums and lots of posts from me!), this post is my last for a little bit.  In fact, you will not see a post from me, nor will this game see any attention from me at all until after Labor Day.

HyperHippo has given us a wonderful and free idle game.  Adventure Capitalist with its enormous number of upgrades and unlocks is quirky, fun, and educational in sexasexvigintillions of ways.  Who knew such large numbers existed, and who knew our CPUs could handle such math!  A long way from the Altair, indeed…

I know a lot of people have griped about the new user interface.  I have not known anything but the present retro-1950s UI, and when it works as intended, it works very well.  Of course, this lay quarterback questions HyperHippo’s wisdom in using Unity when it perhaps could have used HTML 5, especially in the light of the recent casting-off of the Unity Player by Google Chrome into outer darkness.

I am also worried over HyperHippo’s apparent difficulties with Adventure Capitalist being on so many platforms and making the game work well on all of them.  From what I understand, one cannot transfer a save from Kongregate to mobile or back again.  Ditto for Steam and mobile, etc.

But all that is not what’s really bothering me.  What is really getting my goat is there is, at this writing, NO HARD-RESET BUTTON!!  The ability to start a new Adventure Capitalist game from scratch with no Angels…

That most-elementary functionality of an idle game…being able to completely start over again…  The hard-reset button used to exist.  As of a few months ago, it was removed.  And it has not been put back.

And that is what is maddening to me.  In any computer program, there will be bugs or one sort or another.  There will be things missing, mis-balances, etc.

But to remove something as necessary as the hard-reset button in an idle game and then release a major content patch points without putting said button back in points to something very strange.  Either the code or Unity-aspect (or both) of Adventure Capitalist is so wonky that to have a hard-reset button would destroy things completely?  Who knows…

What I do know is this.  With 99.999% of consumer software out there, I can re-start from scratch.  With Adventure Capitalist, I have to do this:

From the AdCap Kongregate chat just now… (18 July 2015 ca. 0035 Central)

secondadvent: delete the file: prefgamez-0021-0792-live-player_2eunity3d

secondadvent: it's in "Unity\WebPlayerPrefs\chat_2ekongregate_2ecom" in app data, assuming you're on windows. if not, you should be able to search for that file

secondadvent: the file ends in .upp - it didn't copy the extension because derp

I shouldn’t have to go into my computer’s innards to re-start a web game (I use Kongregate).

Is the AdCap developer culture on this one point such that something so basic, so elemental, and so profound to any game like Adventure Capitalist cannot be iterated upon?  I cannot imagine what could be keeping the devs from putting back in the lines of code necessary for the hard-reset function to be active and live once more.

Something is wrong at HyperHippo...

…Or the button has been returned, making me to look like a fool - Please tell me I am a fool!

+ + +

The wait for the reset-button, but much, much more the fact my summer will be too busy for me to attend to this thing properly as well as my coming transition to a new computer, this current one being on its last legs, has inspired me to take a break from my OCD-laden Adventure Capitalist blog for a time as well as the game.

At this moment, we are at Games Earth 126 and Moon 2, and both will be left to their own devices until after Labor Day, though I may check in once or twice to see if any Earth upgrades or Unlocks become available.

I’ve taken a longer hiatus before to give HyperHippo time to work out the glitches from last year’s holiday-candy-cane-from-hell update, and when I return from this one, I look forward to a really nice Angel-gain upon my next Earth and Moon resets.

Adventure Capitalist is immense fun, and I look forward to playing this thing for a long time, getting to within one Newspaper of Unlocks completion, only to be sideswiped by a new content release.

Thanks, HyperHippo, for this great game!  Bye, for now…

  1. The hard reset would be fixed for everyone if some beginner would just save and post to the world an empty save!
    Congratulations for getting this far!
And what was this delaying/no more delaying of +xx upgrades? what way is preferred?

    1. There is no difference in future building costs if I delay free-building upgrades. The preferred way, now that I know, is to buy all free-building upgrades as soon as possible.

  2. It's worth now to get back to AdvCap!
MegaBucks are useful now! each 10 MB get one Ticket which multiply one investment type by 777%. I got 2 for Earth and 3 for Moon (and soon a new one for Mars announced for soon).

    1. No amount of Megabuck spending is worth it if we cannot export and import our saves as well as be able to hard-reset without going through the bother of deleting .upp files from our hard drive, which is what Hyper Hippo continually recommends, contrary to what I would expect any professional gaming outfit to do.

I don't mind boosts for real money. Just give me the most-critical functionality for free? Functionality that allows me to play the game and purchase upgrades and boosts for the future?

  3. Mars ready, can be easily unlocked for 56 hours later.
Moon MUCH accelerated by several intermediary unlocks and upgrades.
    Earth stays the same.
